The 12 members of CSC Brazil 17 have split into five sub-teams, each with a different client. My team has 3 members - Rene Braun from Switzerland, Andrea Franklin from Texas, and me. Our client is Instituto Desenvolvimento do Trabalho (IDT) - the Institute of Labour Development.

IDT is a not-for-profit social organization whose aim is to facilitate the development of work and entrepreneurship in Ceará state. The organization has a contract with Ceará Ministry of Labour and Social Development to provide employment services to the people of Ceará. In fulfilling this role, the organization carries out a wide variety of tasks - including assisting job seekers to find employment, helping employers fill job vacancies, assessing eligibility for unemployment insurance, preparing candidates for interview, providing training, assisting contract / freelance workers to find roles, and issuing Brazilian work permits (known as CTPS). The organization also performs research and produces studies on the socio-economic and employment situation in Ceará.
These services are provided through a network of 38 service centers across Céara state - in both urban and rural locations. Additionally, IDT has 34 centers in partnership with municipalities, and a mobile unit based in Fortaleza. The organization deals with over 1 million customers per year, so is a very important part of the social system in Ceará.

So, what are we doing for IDT ? Well, the organization would like to develop a better system for managing the flow of customers in their centers, so that they can both improve customer experience (e.g. reduce waiting times), and more efficiently utilize the units. So, we are working with IDT's IT unit to gather requirements, analyze, and architect an IT system to meet these goals.
There is a short article about our visit in the IDT Newsletter "Informativo Em Tempo".
We've been working hard with the group for the last couple of weeks. In the first week, we were fact finding - visiting several units to discover the issues (I'll post another blog entry about these visits), and then defining the project objectives. In the second week, we have been gathering requirements - both functional (what the system needs to do - capturing this information using actors and use cases) and non-functional (system quality attributes - e.g. scalability, security, accessibility, etc.). Next week, we will verify requirements with IDT, and will then move into defining architecture.
